National AMR symposium

The National AMR Symposium was held on 11th April 2024 at Terma Linca Resort & Spa, Babesa Thimphu. It was one of the symposiums of the 8th International Conference on Medical and Health Sciences (IMCH), hosted by the Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB), in partnership with the Fleming Fund Project. Both the national and international participants were involved in the symposium. The national participants included the Ministry of Health, Fleming Fund project, KGUMSB and the Department of livestock (DoL). The DoL was represented from the NCAH, RVH & EC and the dzongkhag Veterinary Hospitals.

Since, addressing the AMR requires multisectoral approaches, the presentations and the Panel discussions were conducted encompassing all the relevant stakeholders in the country as below:

  • Addressing AMR Challenges in Human Health: Exploring strategies and interventions to mitigate the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance within healthcare settings, focusing on prudent antimicrobial usage and infection control measures.
  • Tackling AMR Challenges in Animal Health: Investigating the interconnectedness of human and animal health in the spread of antimicrobial resistance and proposing solutions to curb AMR emergence and transmission within veterinary practices and livestock management.
  • Assessing the Impact of AMR on Food Safety: Examining the implications of antimicrobial resistance on food production systems, foodborne illnesses, and consumer safety, and proposing measures to ensure the integrity of the food supply chain.
  • Addressing the Silent Pandemic through Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) and Infection Control Strategies: Highlighting the significance of antimicrobial stewardship programs and infection control practices in mitigating the spread of antimicrobial resistance, both within healthcare facilities and the broader community.
  • National AMR Program and Initiatives: Reviewing existing national AMR programs and initiatives, evaluating their effectiveness, and engaging in a collaborative panel discussion to identify opportunities for improvement and future action.

In essence, the National AMR Symposium served as a comprehensive forum for stakeholders to exchange insights, best practices, and innovative solutions in the collective fight against antimicrobial resistance, aligning with the overarching goals of the Fleming Fund Project and contributing to global efforts to safeguard public health.
