Refresher Training for Field Veterinary Paraprofessionals (24- 29 November, 2025, Trashigang)

The Department of Livestock (DoL), in collaboration with FAO and with funding support from Pandemic Fund Project, is conducting a six-day refresher training program for field veterinary paraprofessionals from the east-central and eastern regions. The program brings together participants from seven districts, including participants from Regional Veterinary Hospital & Epidemiology Centre (RVH&EC) Gelephu, RVH & EC Phuntsholing,   SVL  Nganglam, and the Center for Nublang Conservation & Development under NBC. A total of 39 veterinary paraprofessionals posted at Livestock Extension Centres, District Veterinary Hospitals, central programs and government farms are participating in this training program. With this cohort, the Department will successfully complete the nationwide refresher training for all field veterinary paraprofessionals in the country.

With the rapid advancements in veterinary medicine and increasing emergence and re-emergence of transboundary animal diseases, zoonosis and public health threats, continuous learning and upskilling of knowledge and practical skills are crucial for field veterinary paraprofessionals. Therefore, this  refresher training program covers key areas essential for improving animal health service delivery  in the country, focusing on Veterinary Preventive and Clinical Medicine,  Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, Animal Welfare, Biosecurity and Biosafety, animal reproduction, common Surgical Procedures, and National Disease Prevention and Control Strategies.

A combination of theoretical, practical, pre-training and post training test approaches are being adopted for this training program to ensure comprehensive learning. After this training, participants are expected to have upgraded skills and knowledge, leading to enhanced efficiency in animal health service delivery. This initiative aims to strengthen the delivery of critical veterinary services in the field, ultimately enhancing the standard of animal health care, food security and safeguarding public health in Bhutan.
