A refresher hands-on training on the application of the Veterinary Information System (VIS) and G2C (Veterinary Medicines) System is underway at Paro from 13th to 15th April 2023. It is being conducted by the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) in collaboration with National Veterinary Hospital (NVH); the Project Management Unit (PMU), Ministry of Health; and the Information, Communication, and Technology Division (ICTD), MoAL. The opening session of the training program was graced by the Director, of the Department of Livestock; the Chief of the Animal Health Division, and the Officiating Program Director, NCAH.
VIS is an online animal health information management system for Bhutan. It records data concerning veterinary services delivery in all the animal health extension centres and other relevant agencies in the country. The G2C system is an online database management system with the functionalities of indenting, distributing, and mobilization of veterinary medicines and equipment.
The training program is being attended by 52 officials from the Regional Livestock Development Centres, Regional Veterinary Hospital and Epidemiology Centres, Satellite Veterinary Laboratories, Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospitals, and Government Farms.
With the completion of the training, all the currently serving veterinary professionals and paraprofessionals at regional, district, farms and gewog levels are trained to use these systems in the collection and management of data concerning all the veterinary clinical services performed, disease outbreak information sharing, and medicine and equipment indenting.
The expected outcomes of the implementation of VIS in the country are:
- Facilitate data-based animal health and related policy development in the country.
- Generate comprehensive data concerning antimicrobial usage (AMU) through various veterinary clinical practices in the country.
- Ease carrying out passive surveillance on AMU in the veterinary sector.
- Enhance monitoring and evaluation of AMU by field veterinarians and VPPs.
- Enhance reporting of AMU in Bhutan to relevant authorities, national and international.
- Facilitate online indenting and distribution of veterinary medicines and equipment in the country.
- Generate data, assess, and evaluate the usage of other veterinary drugs and products in the field.
- Ease and facilitate recording clinical and disease outbreak data on a real-time basis.
- Enhance coordination in responding to disease outbreaks and reporting.
The development of these systems and subsequent training of the animal health officials in the country has been funded by the Fleming Fund Country Grant and is technically supported by ICTD, MoAL, and NGN Technology Private Ltd, Thimphu.
