FAO Director-General Visits National Centre for Animal Health

Thimphu, February 4, 2025 – His Excellency Dr. Qu Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, visited the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) today, reaffirming FAO’s strong partnership with Bhutan in advancing animal health and disease control. He was accompanied by His Excellency, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, distinguished delegates from the FAO, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, and the Director and Chiefs from the Department of Livestock.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Sangay Rinchen, Program Director of NCAH, highlighted the centre’s critical role as Bhutan’s apex institution for animal health. He acknowledged FAO’s longstanding support, particularly in strengthening Bhutan’s response to avian influenza, rabies control, and African Swine Fever (ASF). Currently, NCAH and FAO are collaborating on the Pandemic Fund Project to enhance disease surveillance and preparedness.
As part of today’s program, Dr. Qu Dongyu launched Bhutan’s ASF Risk Communication Strategy, a crucial step in enhancing disease awareness and response efforts. Additionally, he handed over a PCR machine to the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, further strengthening Bhutan’s diagnostic capacity.
The visit highlights FAO’s continued commitment to supporting Bhutan’s efforts in safeguarding animal health, enhancing livelihoods, and ensuring a resilient livestock sector.
