The center hosted several international visitors in line with ongoing collaborations through the Fleming Fund and infectious disease surveillance initiatives.
Dr. Yoshihiro Kaku, a virologist at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) in Japan, visited NCAH from March 17-21, 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen the ongoing partnership between NCAH, RCDC, and NIID in addressing infectious zoonotic diseases. Dr. Kaku’s visit centered on technology transfer, particularly focusing on establishing the Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization (FAVN) test for rabies at the center, as well as discussing the next steps for advancing this collaboration.
On March 18, 2025, Dr. Fred Unger, International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) Regional Representative for South, East, and Southeast Asia, and Dr. Jigme Tenzin, Centre Head for Sustainable Mountain Agriculture at the College of Natural Resources, also visited NCAH. During their visit, we explored potential areas for collaboration, especially in the prevention and control of infectious diseases.
On 18 March 2025, Fleming Fund fellow mentors from the Peter Doherty Institute, University of Melbourne, visited the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) to enhance collaboration with key stakeholders in Bhutan’s agricultural and animal health sectors. The visit focused on strengthening AMR surveillance, animal health management, and food safety. Key discussions included reviewing ongoing projects related to AMR, AMU, and AMS, assessing laboratory capabilities, standardizing animal weight assessment methodologies, and participating in the AMR National Action Plan review workshop.
All these visits will strengthen our collaboration, focused on improving the center’s technical expertise and human resource capacity.
