Workshop on Development of the National Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) Surveillance Plan

A national consultative workshop on the development of the National Bovine Tuberculosis (bTB) Surveillance Plan for Bhutan was held from 11–14 August 2026 at Metta Resort, Paro. The workshop was organized by the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH) in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Centre (NDDC), Yusipang, with financial support from the World Bank-funded RNR-Jobs Project. Chaired by the Chief, Animal Health Division (AHD), the workshop brought together 22 participants from 11 institutions representing animal health, public health, wildlife, and food safety sector.

The workshop was conducted to develop a coordinated and evidence-based national approach to bTB surveillance, in response to the absence of an established national baseline and the need for systematic detection and understanding of the disease situation in Bhutan. The surveillance plan aims to determine the national prevalence and geographical hotspots of bTB, identify key animal, herd, management and environmental risk factors, strengthen field and laboratory diagnostic capacity, understand the spatial and epidemiological distribution of the disease, strengthen One Health collaboration, and generate evidence to guide bTB prevention, controland policy development. Through technical presentations, evidence review, group work, plenary discussions and consensus building, participants contributed to defining the surveillance objectives, methodology and implementation priorities for establishing a national bTB surveillance programme in Bhutan.
