Nima P Yangchen and Sonam Tobgyal, second-year Biotechnology students from the University of Manchester funded by RS STEM scholarship, completed a four-week internship (August 2023) within the Laboratory Service Unit at the National Centre for Animal Health (NCAH). During this period, their primary involvement was in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, hematology, and serology. Their training encompassed practical experience in tasks such as preparing media, cultivating and identifying bacterial pathogens (specifically E.coli, Salmonella, and Enterococcus), preserving isolates, conducting antimicrobial susceptibility tests using the Disk Diffusion method, operating the Vitek 2 compact machine, performing virus detection through DNA extraction and real-time PCR (LSDV, FMD, HS) as well as executing enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for detection of Brucella antigen.

On 24th of August, 2023, the unit heads gathered to observe the completion of their internship. The students gave a short presentation on their experience as interns at NCAH. Subsequently, a letter of completion of the internship was handed to them. NCAH would like to wish them all the best for all future endeavors.
