The National Centre of Animal Health, Department of Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests with financial assistance from Department of Public Health, Ministry of Health jointly observed the World Rabies Day on 28th September 2014 in Samtse. Pilot FMD Vaccination campaign in Chukha Dzongkhag

National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang in collaboration with Regional Livestock Development Centre, Tsimasham and Dzongkhag Livestock Sector, Chukha have successfully carried out Pilot Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) mass vaccination campaign in animals covering the villages within 1 km radius along the National Highways and adjacent to International border. A total of 3,251 animals (cattle, goats, sheep) were vaccinated against FMD virus while 638 serum samples were collected for sero-survey. Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak in Wangdue

Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak has occurred in Ngentsa (migration area) under Gobja village, Dangchu Geog in Wangdue Dzongkhag. Although the actual outbreak has occurred on 5th October, 2014 it was reported to Livestock Extension Office only on 10th October. Out of 57 cattle in the migratory area, 14 cattle were affected in three herds. The investigation team comprising from Regional Livestock Development Centre, Wangdue and Dzongkhag Administration, Wangdue have carried out the investigation and symptomatically diagnosed as FMD. Rabies outbreaks

A case of suspected rabies was reported in Jersey breeding bull at Jigmeling, village, Dekiling Geog, Sarpang District on 8th September 2014 as per reports received from the Satellite Veterinary Laboratory (SVL), Gelephu. Another suspected rabies was reported from bull at Shershong village Shershong Geog under Sarpang Dzongkhag on 12th September 2014. SVL Gelephu has investigated and collected the brain samples for laboratory confirmation. The disease was confirmed as rabies at SVL Gelephu using the rapid rabies antigen detection kit. FAO review mission on HPED support to NCAH, Serbithang

Gleeson, an independent FAO Consultant visited National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang on 3rd September, 2014 for reviewing the mission on Highly Pathogenic Emerging Diseases (HPED) for SAARC countries supported by Food and Agriculture Office Regional Support Unit, Kathmandu. Black Quarter outbreak in Tashigang & Zhemgang Dzongkhags

One case of Black Quarter (BQ) disease was reported from Tashi Yangphu Nublang Farm under Khaling Geog, Tashigang Dzongkhag on 24th August 2014. The investigation team from Regional Livestock Development Centre, Kanglung and the farm management confirmed the disease as BQ. There was one death out of 23 susceptible animals in the locality. Control measures are in place. Similarly another case of BQ was reported from Dungbi village, Trong, Zhemgang Dzongkhag on 18th August 2014. Out of 12 animals, one affected animal reportedly died. Gumboro outbreak in Sarpang & Tsirang Dzongkhags

Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) outbreak has occurred in government farm in Gakidling Geog under Sarpang Dzongkhag on 27th August 2014. A total of 500 pullets have died from 700 sick birds in a flock of 2700 number of susceptible birds. The disease investigation and sample testing was carried out by Satellite Veterinary Laboratory Gelephu and the National Poultry Development Centre, Sarpang. The samples were tested against Infectious Bursal Disease using rapid test kit and found positive for IBD. Rabies outbreak in Sarpang & Samtse Dzongkhags

One case of suspected rabies in Bovine was reported from Army Welfare Project Area, Samtse Dzongkhag on 15th August 2014. Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospital (DVH) has carried out the investigation and collected sample for laboratory confirmation. The sample was tested at NCAH, Serbithang by Florescent Antibody Test and was confirmed positive to Rabies. Control measures are in place.
