Rabies outbreak in Rangjung town, Trashigang

On 4th October 2016, a stray dog had bitten two people within Rangjung Central School compound. On subsequent days (6 and 7 Oct 2016) another two dogs have bitten two people. Two of the suspected rabid dogs were killed by the people and the brain tissue tested positive to rabies virus. The four people who were bitten by dogs (category III bite) were immediately given Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIGs) and are undergoing PEP at Rangjung BHU. On 11 October 2016, a suspected rabid dog (probably the dog that have bitten one person on 7 Oct 2016) has bitten 3 cattle and are being treated as per the National guideline. Visit of Thai officials from Department of Livestock Development (DLD) to Bhutan for technical collaboration

Three member delegation lead by the Director of National Institute of Animal Health (NIAH), Department of Livestock Development, Thailand was in the country to strengthen collaboration in the areas of Animal Health and Production. The team visited the National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang on 28th September 2016, met with the national counterpart and other relevant officials. The delegates from both the country agreed for laboratory twining on Brucellosis. Rabies case in Zom at Merak, Trashigang

A rabies case in a yak (zom) was reported from one of the herds (Serkem Laptsa, one day journey from Merak village), Trashigang Dzongkhag on 13th August 2016. The animal showed aggressive behavior and died on 13 August 2016. The brain tissue sample tested positive to rabies virus using Rapid Antigen Detection Test and the sample is being further referred to National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang for confirmation using Florescent Antibody Test (FAT). This case is a follow up case of rabies incursion into Merak on 29th July 2016. Review and Planning workshop

National Centre for Animal Health, Serbithang conducted the review and planning workshop on 19th July 2016 at the conference hall. The main objective of the workshop was to review the plan activities of the fiscal year 2015- 2016 and to plan the work activities of the 2016 – 2017. After the presentation of the review work by the respective unit in charges, Program Director and the chairman of the meeting commended on the very successful implantation and congratulated all the staff involved for each activities.
