Sporadic cases of rabies in dogs and cattle have been detected in Rangjung town and the surrounding villages under Trashigang Dzongkhag despite implementation of rapid containment measures. In order to prevent establishment of endemicity of rabies virus in eastern region, a strategic control measures is being planned for implementation to eliminate the infection foci by National Centre for Animal Health in collaboration with Dzongkhag Livestock Sector and Regional Livestock Development Centre, Khangma. It will be difficult to eliminate or eradicate once there is entrenchment of the virus in the region. Rabies cases in dogs at Samdrup Jongkhar and Trashigang Rangjung

A rabies case in a stray dog was confirmed at Samdrup Jongkhar town on 7 Jan 2017. The dog was seen roaming at the Dzong area on 6 Jan 2017, but was captured and kept under strict isolation (inside a wire mesh cage) at DVH, S Jongkhar. The dog died on 7 Jan 2017 and the brain tissue tested positive to rabies virus. This is the second case of rabies in a stray dog in S Jongkhar town where both of the cases were captured in the town area. S Jongkhar shares open border with Indian town Daranga, Assam State. Rabies case in a pet dog at Orong, SJongkhar

Rabies case in a pet dog (puppy) was confirmed at Thonkorong village (near Orong High School), Orong geog under Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag on 31 December 2016. The animal showed symptom on 28 December and died on 31 December 2016. The dog was not vaccinated against rabies. The pet dog was bitten by a stray dog one month before and the biting stray dog had disappeared from the area. The people have not informed about the bite case to the Geog Livestock office for investigation. No human bite cases have been reported. Meanwhile, an active surveillance plan will be developed and implemented along S/Jongkhar-Deothang-Narphung highway for early detection of rabies cases and for preventing spread into interior eastern Bhutan...
